Yesterday, I was continuing to ponder the idea of “Doing” vs. “Being”. It suddenly dawned on me that we don’t ask a child- “What do you want to DO when you grow up?”. We ask them, “What do you want to BE when you grow up?”. This was an amazing discovery to me, because then I thought when you meet someone as an adult you ask them “What do you do?”. What do you DO for work… What do you DO for fun… What do you DO for exercise… What do you want to DO for dinner… (ok, so maybe that one doesn’t work). Anyway, the point is, we find it appropriate to ask a child what they want to be, but somewhere along the way we decide that life is about doing, not being. And then the switch is flipped. For some reason, when that switch is flipped it seems we pursue the act of Doing like there is no turning back. It becomes our ever-loving pursuit to fill our lives, our days, our kid’s days, our every waking moment with another activity- another thing to do. And lost along the way is the remembrance of what and who we wanted to be. We chalk it up to pipe dreams of our childhood, pushing the passions back to a distant corner of our minds to collect rubble and debris.
So what would happen if you dusted off those dreams? What would happen if you remembered what you wanted to be when you were just an innocent, wonder-filled kid? Would your world fall apart; or would it open up? What would happen if you look for the thread that runs consistently through your life, the idea that is eternal inside you? Don’t know what I mean??? Well, what have you always known that you loved, what is/was your passion, what do you dream about when you want to escape your doingness? That is the eternal inside of you. That is the point to connect to. This is where the Being begins again, because we all knew what we wanted to BE when we were little, it just got covered up with the DO.
Now; you might have to take a few moments of silence to consider your inside passions. For some of you I know they might be buried deep. I know mine used to be. They are still there though, just waiting to be uncovered and wiped off so they can shine again. So I leave you with an idea to start you on your new path towards Being… it is an idea that comes from the Tao– Stop what you are doing right now. Next, give yourself permission to just be still, doing nothing. Then, do nothing some more, and some more, and some more. As you do nothing, you will open up to the idea of what you were meant to Be. And amazingly, opening back up to what you are meant to be is one of the most enlightening things you could ever do!
